State official: Disability rights apply on fire captain test
STAMFORD - A state human rights investigator has faulted the city for denying a learning-disabled firefighter's request for extra time on a test for captain's rank, documents show. The city has defended its handling of the request, claiming fire captains must be able to read and interpret information quickly at emergency scenes. But disability rights experts said the city likely violated rules for disability cases and criticized its lack of a standardized procedure for employees who request extra time and other accommodations. .
Fresh target for advocate of disabled
A man who has filed more than 1,000 lawsuits across California alleging violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act has made his way to American Canyon. George Louie of West Sacramento, and Linda Pedroni of Calistoga, who both use wheelchairs, have filed a class-action lawsuit against all Napa County cities saying their sidewalks have ADA violations. The Napa County Superior Court suit names American Canyon, Calistoga, Napa, St. Helena and Yountville. "They are seeking an order that cities make their sidewalks accessible to the disabled," said their Los Angeles attorney, Morse Mehrban. The lawsuit claims flaws that make the cities' sidewalks and walkways inaccessible to the disabled include lack of paving, no usable curb cuts or ramps, uneven or broken pavement and objects that impede wheelchairs, scooters and walkers.
"Stuperbowl XIV" in Washington Park
It's Stuperbowl XIV in Albany's Washington Park. A group of local guys tackled the cold to get in a game of flag football at noon on Sunday. It's a tradition that's been going strong since the early 90s. Original member John Blowers said, "We try to model ourselves after the Super Bowl in almost every way, except for talent." Another founding member Dan Coffey said, "It feels pretty good. I mean, the older I get the harder it is and come Monday morning, it's hard to get up." Nathan Courtny is new to the game. He said, "It's a challenge to keep up with the tradition with the Super Bowl, but we feel good to be out here. We're not going to feel as good tomorrow." .
